Is there any truth to the claim that the EU’s proposed Brexit deal with Turkey is a ‘coup’?

The Turkish government says it’s not behind the coup attempt, but the EU has called it “an attempt to undermine democracy”.

EU officials say there are concerns that the coup plotters could have been inspired by a wider conspiracy, but they also insist they’re not behind it.

The European Commission has warned that any Turkish government plans to move to create a parallel state outside the EU would be illegal.

“This is a coup attempt against Turkey, not an attempt to destroy democracy,” the commission said in a statement.

“Such an act would violate international law and be criminalised by all member states.”
